TWO YEARS AGO LAST NIGHT – Taylor Hicks at the Florabama

Can we do this all over again? – by Legacy

I had received a very generous offer from a “Taylor friend” to stay at a luxury condo which was right next door to the FloraBama. This gave me the opportunity to partake in those adult beverages and walk the short distance to the heavenly piece of real estate where I was staying. A funny side note with those adult beverages…. shortly after I arrived at the Florabama, I saw Clay, Stephen and some of the band members. I walked up to say hello and Stephen held up the rope that was placed around the area that they were sitting in and invited me in. I followed them to the bar and ordered my drink. As the evening progressed the lines at the other bars in the building were quite long, so I returned to the enclosed space to order my drinks, the guard even holding the rope up for me. Thinking that a tab was being built for me…. I was not asked nor did I leave a credit card…. at the end of the evening when I went to “pay up” I was told it was already taken care of….. turns out I was drinking on Taylor’s dime for his band and friends…. I owe Taylor a few drinks!!!
Taylor took the stage in a black Stax tee shirt, and black hat (I think it was either a Taylor or maybe a Gibson guitar hat) and his black New Balance tennies — gotta let everyone know what Tay’s wearing!!! lol He was drinking Bushwhackers that night. Some of the songs that stand out for me is Gonna Move which he sang with the lady who schedules the bands at the Florabama and thus hired Taylor for his gigs at the Florabama. His harmonica was hot that night, always close by. We also had a sing-a-long with Taylor on the song “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Taylor did a bit of rap in the middle of it. He sang and we boogied until 2am. It seemed that it was time to close the bar and Taylor had left the building. The group I was with did not want to end the party so we continued to visit and planned to stick around until they kicked us out. Many left, with only the Florabama regulars and those of us who were having too much fun sticking around to party!!!
Then …… Taylor came back and was performing again!!! We were so excited, we moved to the edge of the stage…. so close we could watch the sweat on Taylor’s brow! Taylor asked Zippy to come on stage and play the drums, which delighted us all. (we love Zippy). Taylor sang some of his and our old favorites…. Badge, Sneaking Sally through the Alley, Naked in the Jungle …. We called Orca in Canada… we needed to share with someone!!! and it was nearing 3 am in the morning and we thought she would appreciate being awakened at that hour with songs from Taylor!
It was one of the most memorable of nights, and I could not help but think about what it must have been like for the very young Taylor when he was performing here, and what was going through Taylor’s mind that night with the memories this place holds for him.
Taylor left the stage, the lights come up and out of the bar we trooped, still too high on the evening to want to head for our beds, and exciting things were happening in the parking area, so we stood there watching Taylor as he handled problems and prepared to move the bus. We never did get any sleep that night … we stayed up until dawn visiting with old and new friends, wading in the surf, and when we had breakfast just across the street at the “awful waffle house” we wondered how many meals Taylor had eaten and if he sat where we were sitting!!
Can we do this all over again?
TWO YEARS AGO TODAY – Taylor Hicks in Orange Beach, AL
September 2, 2009

The show at the Wharf in Orange Beach was the perfect way to spend a Labor Day weekend, followed by a nightcap of Taylor Hicks and friends at the legendary Flora-Bama down on the beach. Here’s one that I know we locals sure appreciated – a stellar medley of “The Maze” and “My Home’s in Alabama.” Welcome home, Taylor.

Long Way Home, Hard Rock! – by RagsQueen

Every time Taylor performs at a House of Blues, the performance is of the highest energy level imaginable! And since Hard Rock Live is much like House of Blues (except you could sit in Orlando), I had very high expectations, and I was not disappointed!
The opening montage brought the audience to its feet! And it was still standing when Taylor took the stage singing “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu” and “Hey Pockey Way”. The energy was high and Taylor was smiling like he just won the lottery! Yes, this was going to be a fantastic show!
Through out the evening, we were either sitting or standing, depending on the beat of the song. And it seemed that even those who did sit down did so reluctantly! Many of us were dancing in our seats – it was hard to sit still! But then, it’s generally hard to sit still for a Taylor Hicks show anyway! Sit or stand, stand or sit, that’s always the dilemma which usually gets resolved based on house rules and set up.
The seats at Hard Rock Live were interlocking for the first several rows. During the time between the main set and encore, fans behind the first several rows were doing everything possible to separate those seats so they could move to the stage. For those of in these few rows, we had to move quickly to keep from been trampled in the stampede!
The concert was one of the summer’s best. High energy on a hot Florida night.
TWO YEARS AGO TODAY – Taylor Hicks in Pompano Beach, FL
August 25, 2009

It was a hot night in Pompano Beach. It is always hot in South Florida, and Taylor being there made it even Hotter! Security lost total control of us!!! The crowd was very enthusiastic to see Taylor. Taylor would pose for pictures while he was singing and dancing. We had our dancing shoes on that night, and Taylor Gave Us Tonight!!!! He looked so happy, relaxed, and really in his element… I had roses again for Taylor, and I gave them to him during Heaven Knows. He held them in the air, and the crowd cheered!!!
A few of our new friends joined Allison & I to go to Ft. Lauderdale after the concert. We were invited to go see Josh play at “The Poorhouse”. Josh is from Ft. Lauderdale, and his family & friends were all there. While at The Poorhouse, guess who happened to walk in the door? Yes, it was Taylor. Taylor got up on stage (very shyly I might add), and sang two songs.
It was an amazing night!

I Want To Take You Higher – by PBoyers

The Clearwater show was magical. I remember the the excitement in the audience and that people, including myself, were dancing in the aisles. When he started singing this tag…. I knew I was in a Taylor-made heaven. This really touched me and it is a night I will always treasure.
